QLD war veterans encouraged to seek housing assistance under new changes

Veterans facing homelessness have been delivered fair access to assistance under new changes announced by Housing Minister Mick de Brenni MP in Parliament today.

Income eligibility for the Bond Loan and Rental Grants programs will be expanded to include Veterans’ Affairs disability payments.

Mr de Brenni says he was alerted to the need for changes after meeting with local veterans living in affordable housing.

Former Navy Veteran Dave spoke up on behalf of veterans facing homelessness in March this year.

“As soon as I met Dave, right there on his door step, he told me straight up that we have to do something to help homeless veterans,” Mr de Brenni said.

“He pointed out recipients of Veterans’ Affairs disability payments could be helped by a Bond Loan or Rental Grant, but currently can’t access them due to income limits for these services.”

Mr de Brenni said that passion of Dave’s plea compelled him to make a historic down payment on housing reform for Queensland’s most vulnerable.

“I fundamentally believe that reforms like this is what good government is all about.”

The changes will deliver eligibility for assistance to people receiving the Veterans’ Affairs Total and Permanent Impairment Disability Pensions and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Special Payments.

“These amendments to the Bond Loans and Rentals Grants programs run by my Department provide support for people to access homes in the private rental market,” Mr de Brenni said.

“These men and women fought for freedom for all Australians and it is why today I am proud to deliver dignity to them in return.

“At this time when we we are all remembering the fallen and those who made it home, I encourage all Queenslanders to take a moment to spare a thought for all of the vets doing it tough this ANZAC Day,” Mr de Brenni said.
