The letter identifies the importance of OP TAMAR as a tri service operation. The minister for Veterans Affairs the Hon. Mark Chester MP will attend the event in Canberra sometime in February 2020. They will hold a parade followed by a presentation ceremony of the award to all recipients. All Rwandan veterans are encouraged to attend the parade in Canberra to be recognised for their service.
The operations mission was to provide medical support to UN soldiers on the ground. They also had the task of providing humanitarian aid and security for the return of Rwandan displaced persons to their homes. The entire mission was 12 months long with two 6 month contingents from August 1994 – 1995.
The UN operation gained the highest Australian awards recognition since joining the UN.
