Rwanda the Australian Contingent 1994-1995

Operation TAMAR was Australia’s contribution to the 2nd United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR II), which consisted of sending approximately 700 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel in two contingents to provide medical assistance with logistical support and elements of security for the medics.

Australian Service Contingents 1 and 2 who served in Rwanda on Operation TAMAR were recognised for their service with the award of a Meritorious Unit Citation on the 25th July 2019.

“The men and women of Australian Service Contingents 1 and 2 demonstrated extraordinary courage, discipline and compassion in the performance of their duties and on behalf of their country we recognise their meritorious service,”
Minister for Veteran Affairs, the Hon Darren Chester MP said.

Are you one of the 700 tri-service defence personnel who were deployed on OP TAMAR. If so, and you live in and around the Perth area, we want to hear from you.

The Royal Australian Regiment Association, Western Australia (RARA WA) is looking at holding a proposed commemorative service to remember that operation on the 22 February 2020. This date will mark 25 years since both contingents did a hand over in the capital city of Rwanda, Kigali in 1995.

A wreath will be laid by the Vice President of the RARA WA Mr Kevin O’Halloran on behalf of the contingents. Personnel from both contingents will also be formally presented their Meritorious Unit Citations.

The ceremony will be held at the Flame of Remembrance, Kings Park, Botanic Gardens, Perth. The ceremony will be conducted by the President of the RARA WA Mr Peter Heeney.
